Strengthening Montana’s communities is at the core of our economic challenge and opportunity. To support a growing economy, hardworking Montanans need an affordable place to live. Housing prices in Montana continue to rise, with Montana seeing an annual growth of 4.1-percent in housing prices per year statewide since 2008 (UM’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research). In addition to high housing costs across the state, condition and availability has been a challenge in many rural communities. The demand for affordable homes has outpaced the state’s ability to develop them. Still, Montana supports the development or rehabilitation of on-average 485 affordable homes each year. Since 2013, the Department of Commerce has supported the development or rehabilitation of 2,429 affordable homes in Montana.
The state’s toolbox for supporting the development of affordable homes is varied and integrated. To learn more about finding solutions to your community’s housing needs visit HOUSING.MT.GOV and COMDEV.MT.GOV
